My vote is to minimize the stuff on >the Mall and the surrounding area when you have small kids, or take a guided >tour for most of it- otherwise it's just way too much walking for the kids >(and maybe the adults). You can always get the multi-day Metro passes, but >check the prices, you have to use the Metro quite a bit for them to be a >better deal than just paying for each fare.
BTW you can get a metro day pass for around $5 - its good for the day you buy it, from 8:30am through closing. If you do the mall, look at leaving the metro at either the L'Enfant Plaza or the Smithsonian exit. Fair warning about the Smithsonian exit there are a lot of people clusing around tourists looking to sell Smithsonian guidebooks etc. Don't get one, all they do is pick up the stuff at the Smithsonian and sell it to gullible tourists. There are a several tour companies that go through Smithsonian, I've used this one with visitors, http://www.tourmobile.com/. Its a hop on and off and circulates through the monuments and the Smithsonian. With kids or seniors its very good. But my favourite (and probably amoung the most unique) is DC Ducks, http://www.dcducks.com/. They use an old amphibious truck to tour through DC. The tour operators are great. > >My daughter loves the Natural History Museum, the east wing of the National >Gallery of Art (the modern stuff), the Hirschorn Gallery of Art (also >modern). Air and Space is good, too, of course. Those four are "reasonably" >close together on the Mall. > >Despite having lived in DC for years, I have never been to the zoo, but >that's always a good option for kids. Maybe current DC locals have other >thoughts, as my knowledge is potentially a bit out of date. It really depends on what you're interested in - the Udvar-Hazy annex of the Air and Space Museum is fantastic if you're a flight enthusiast. It has a very unique collection of historic aircraft. The Hirshorn is very good, but my favourite, is the Sackler Gallery. Aside from one of the best collections of Asian art, it also has Whistler's Peacock room. If you have a chance talk with your house or Senate rep, they may be able to get you into the executive tour of the White House. For kids the National Chidren's Museum is very good, http://www.ncm.museum/ as is the Spy Museum or the Newseum. Since you're going to be near Quantico, you may also want to check out the Marine Museum. The Zoo is very worth while seeing. Its near where one of the last Allaire conferences were held - DevCon in 2000. Its near the Woodley Park Metro. General suggestions, Don't repeast Don't drive -95 if you can avoid it. Ugly to say the least. Depending on the stay plan at least 4 to 5 days to do the Museums justice. The Zoo can be done in a day.
