the Zoo used to be awesome and probably still is ;)

By the way, the Mall is not all that safe after dark. I know several people
who were robbed there. Something to keep in mind. Capitol Hill is a also a
good place to get in trouble, so don't stray too far from the government
buildings.

Kids always like the Air and Space Museam and there used be a merry-go-round
on the mall -- check with someone who has been there more recently than I
have. Your best bet for kid-friendly entertainment may be whatever is going
on on the mall -- seemed like there was always some sort of powpow or
concert or festival -- but if that's not looking good I wonder of the Folger
Theater still puts on open-air shows?

Anothr thought -- think it was in the museum of science that Lara got to
hold a three-inch hissing cockroach...your kids are probably too young for
the National Gallery (I still remember with horror the time baby James
pulled a medieval tryptych off the wall. He actually didn''t hurt it but
everyone in the vicinity had a heart attack including me before I managed to
pry it out of his little fingers...)
