Hhm, well that's certainly a vastly different definition of what God is than
any Christian has. And most major religions, for that matter.

>And yet - in my definition - could still be Christian.

Well, one can call themselves anything they wish, but that doesn't necessarily
make it accurate. I could call myself Jewish as well because I basically read
and study the same texts as they do...but you would have a hard time finding a
Jewish person that would agree with my definition. What you describe is *not*
Christianity by any normal definition of that faith. It's a lot closer to
something like Taoism.

>John would never agree with that. Thomas would not only agree with
>it, he lived it.

John is quite clear about the way to the truth...through Jesus Christ.

If I look for differences between the gospel of Thomas and the canonical
gospels, it's far easier to find obvious differences with the synoptics, not so
much with John. For instance, Matthew and Luke is where you will find clear
answers to how to pray, how to fast, how to give alms...the type of thing that
the GoT takes a different stance on. The gnostic message of Thomas is not
something you will find in these other gospels, it's hardly John that stands
alone in refuting it.

Of course, whether John and/or Thomas even wrote these gospels and to what
extent is quite up for debate as well. The authorship of John is certainly
questionable considering the author never names himself (something John is not
shy about elsewhere in the Bible). The theory that there was some argument or
dislike between them is not something there is much evidence for.
