They have money and they decided they are ready to save more lives now.
They haven't abandoned ESCR, just letting it evolve.

Rush said years ago, if there was promise for a cure with ESC private
industry would invest. Instead private industry invested in ASC. Not
saying that won't change when ESCR is ready for prime time and I'm
sure in a decade or so it will be.
