As I have mentioned several times, members of my wife's family are
very religious. We get along, but there is some underlying tension
there. I always feel as if they look down on me or maybe even pity me
for being a non-believer.

We often get into spirited debates on a wide variety of subjects. One
day, we were discussing gay marriage. They made disparaging
stereotypical statements about gay people (as I would have expected)
and they all firmly believe that being gay is not something you are
'born with' but something you choose. (I firmly disagree with this).

Anyway, one of them finally says, 'I believe that God gave those
people those urges as a test of their faith and by giving into them,
they have failed that test'. To which, I replied, 'Did you ever stop
to think that God put gay people on earth to test you? Let's hope not
because you would be failing pretty badly right about now.'
