Heinlein's female characters are always smart, strong, capable, and sexy. They appear to defer to the males, but he makes it pretty clear that is only a ploy to boost the guy's ego. Not sure which ones you read that showed otherwise. But Mama Maureen from Time Enough for Love and To Sail Beyond the Sunset totally kicked ass...hence my user name.
