For heart-stopping patriotism:
Ellis Island
Statue of Liberty
Ground Zero
Grand Central Station/Penn Station.
Intrepid
NYC Public Library

Architecture
Empire State Building
Chrysler Building
Guggenhiem - just the building is worth the time
UN
Cathedral of St John
St Patricks
St Pauls

South Street Seaport
FAO Schwartz
Central park, central park, central park
Central Park carousel
Sailboats at the Conservancy pond
Buying spree on Canal St

More Museums
MuModernArt - not my thing, but was worth the time
AmMuNaturalHistory - dinosaurs (or "Jesus ponies")
Cloisters - medieval art
Tenement Museum
Cooper Hewitt
Whitney

But, for unadulterated NYC, for me,
Any restaurant in Chinatown
Watching a pickup bball game on the courts on the way to Chinatown (they ALL
have game)
Watching chess in the park (Wash Sq)
Water Taxi from Battery Park to Statue of Liberty.

Note, though. be very careful of "walking distance" estimates. especially
with a kid. it is a BIG, BIG town. and by afternoon, a block is a long way.
