Check out the highline while you re there too... It's no super huge  
tourist attraction but i thought it was cool when I went last year.   
It's an old elevated train segment that's been converted into park and  
walking path.  I think it's about a mile long or so and there are  
multiple points to access it from the street.

That's my 'off the beaten path' suggestion.
