After a tape of Shirley Sherrod, USDA director of Rural Development in
Georgia, surfaced in July 2010 in which she said she refused to help a
white farmer who asked her for help and instead referred him to a
white lawyer to be with "one of his own", Vilsack removed her from her
position. He commented, "There is zero tolerance for discrimination at
USDA, and I strongly condemn any act of discrimination against any
person... We have been working hard through the past 18 months to
reverse the checkered civil rights history at the department and take
the issue of fairness and equality very seriously."
