I've heard it said that we still haven't recovered all the engineering knowledge that was lost in the various fires in the Library of Alexandria. Also I'm sure we'd have a well established colony on Mars by now if it weren't for the dark ages. We'd probably have several of them in fact, and some mining outposts in the asteroid belt to boot. 800 years is a long time for scientific progress to be slowed to a near stand still.
