I setup my mother on Linux Mint a few versions back when I was tired of helping her out with antivirus related issues, and XP was a bit much for her. She loves Linux Mint! Set her up with a music player, Firefox, word processing, and VNC / SSH for me to remotely manage. Showed her the programs she wants to use, and she's all set. Having said that, I also set her up with Skype & Webcam -- worked for months, then for some reason went on the fritz and relevant updates wouldn't solve. (Perhaps an upgrade to latest Linux Mint or Ubuntu would quickly solve).
