I haven't been rich, so I can't really speak to the sense of
entitlement there, but I've been poor and spent years on welfare
growing up. I can say that I never met anyone who said, "this is the
sweet life, I'm not going to get a job because I get everything I need
for free". I'm sure that there are some people out there that do feel
that way as you can find at least one person who will admit to holding
pretty much any opinion in this country. But I can say that being poor
really sucks. Being on welfare is not fun or glorious. I did know
people who had basically given up on trying to find jobs and get ahead
because they felt like they were never going to get a fair shake, they
were too beaten down by the system, by life and had pretty much given
up. Maybe those are the folks you are thinking of but I can assure you
that they weren't giving up because they had it good on the government
hand outs.
