"My own experience has been quite similar. The only program explosions I've seen has been Administration, (seriously does the university NEED 7 VP's making over $400,000 a year?)"
That's what I am talking about. You hit the nail on the head. Way too much overhead. "and sports. Thing is a series of reports by the Chronicle of HIgher Education suggest that athletic programs are a serious drain on a University's finances." Theoretically, sports should be a zero sum part of the university. Revenue from the games, TV, merchandise, donations, etc. should pay for the costs of the programs and renovations. Works great for Texas, UNC, Notre Dame. Not so much for Murray State. There is an easy fix for this, at least public schools (private schools should be able to do whatever they want). The states should not allow the athletic departments to spend any money on athletics aside from what is earned by the athletic department. That will never happen. The schools don't want it and the politicians don't want it. The schools don't want it because many donors associate the school with their favorite sport. So, some TX oilman gives money to the college because he loves TX football. Can't alienate these people. Politicians don't want it because the voters would run them out of office if sports started being cut. Makes you wonder if what some colleges lose in paying for sports are made up by donations. Here's what happens when a university does not control spending: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/maryland-accepts-recommendation-will-cut-eight-varsity-sports-programs/2011/11/21/gIQAyn1NjN_story.html Also, Title IX has had an impact on college sports. College now have to offer some sports in order to keep a balance of the sexes. Generally speaking, women's sports are not profitable. Please note that I am not debating the merits of Title IX.
