I think you mean ascetic cult (as in a cult that believed in denying the 
physcial). An aesthetic cult would be a cult that worshipped interior 
design! <g>

Actually, the history of that period is amazing -- there were all these 
little sects that popped up in Judaism and a lot of mystery religions that 
were popular in Israel (the dying god thing) and Jewish and early Christian 
thought contained within them a reaction to this multi-sect atmosphere.
