Even broader than who runs the schools, it's a
whole "community attitude" issue:

yeara gao, our city had a CASA Fair - Community Against
Substance Abuse.

the Chief of Police and Mayor were at a fund-raising
booth selling t-shirts.

the t-shirts had a line drawing of a church with a cross
on the steeple.

my son, who was still in elementary school, I think, had
the guts to go up to the two of them and say he was
bothered by the cross - said it implied the community
was only Christian. He said something like "it's not
just that I'm Jewish, but in my class at school are kids
who are Muslim, Hindu, Buddist, and nothing at all. This
isn't fair to them too."

IIRC the Puritans who came to this country for religious
freedom were very hard on non-Puritans.
