Having spent the last 14 months dealing with my partner's estate, I could
list thousands of reasons why being married to the one you love and share a
life with is a good idea. There have been so many times when the majority
of the problems would have disappeared if I had only been his wife. I was
executor of his estate, had full financial and medical power of attorney,
and still had to deal with crap like the funeral home not wanting to let me
make the arrangements and pay for the funeral, and vendors who wanted to
talk to either him or "his wife". Plus, I was not eligible for his pension
or his social security, because again, not his wife. Basically, it sucks
to have to deal with all this financial mess and the grief at the same
time. Some days, the stress of it nearly kills me.
