The bottom dwellers don't have oil! I'm kidding...sorta.

Oil doesn't explain it all, but neither does conservative vs. liberal.

I'm staunchly on the side of conservative thought when it comes to
economics...so i generally think a state that emphasizes free markets is
going to do better than one that's all about taxation and redistribution.
But state economies are SO complex, that statements of simple causation
like this always raise a red flag for me.

ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL, a free market state is going to blow away a
socialist state in economics. But as we know, all other things are never
equal.
