Getting into some weird science here. Many self-professed conservatives
express their opposition that way, their stance being emotional and
related to disgust sensitivity (the so called "Ick" factor).

First of all a lot of research (we've gone over the multitudes of
difference research lines about this) has shown that the limbic system
in the brain is more active with professed conservatives than
liberals. One idea coming out of this is that given the same visual
stimulus, self-identified conservatives should have a heightened
emotional/disgust response than those identifying themselves as
liberal.

One study, Disgust Sensitivity and the Neurophysiology of Left-Right
Political Orientations by
Kevin B. Smith, Douglas Oxley, Matthew V. Hibbing, John R. Alford, and
John R. Hibbing (2011) PLOS1. found generalized disgust sensitivity
differences between conservatives and liberals. Another set of studies
reported in Disgust Sensitivity Predicts Intuitive Disapproval of Gays
by Yoel Inbar, David A. Pizarro, Joshua Knobe and Paul Bloom (2009)
2009, Vol. 9, No. 3, 435-439, showed that the more disgust sensitive
participants were, the more they showed unfavorable automatic
associations with gay people as opposed to heterosexuals.

So it adds up. The emotional reactions many conservatives express when
confronted with same sex marriage is an expression of their heightened
disgust sensitivity.
