So now the kid can tell his friends how the cops beat him while he was in 
custody, and handcuffed.  That's supposed to make a good impression, and 
make the cops' job easier? Somehow I doubt it.

At the point they put those cuffs on that kid, he was legally in custody 
and subdued.  Miranda applies, as do various other constitutional 
protections, all of which those cops violated.  Police officers have the 
right to as much force as is required making the arrest.   No more. Period.
