I understand your frustration, but I don't use online 
banking as "archival storage".

So what's it good for?

- looking at txns frequently to make sure no fraud on 
the account

- paying bills electronically

- verifying whether a particular bill got paid

- transferring money between accounts

- making sure the Direct-Deposit paycheck made it in

I keep paper statements at least 3 years - in case of 
tax audit.
