3 years, yes.  But if they suspect you committed fraud, I think they can go 
back more.

I keep all papers. 2 years in my filing cabinet and 3 years boxed, then I 
scan anything after that and store them on a CD-ROM.

In California, good idea to keep anything written for at least 4 years, 
especially credit card statements or other contracts.
