Tim, That's as may be. I can sympathize with your point of view. But that doesn't mean that it's a good idea to go to war with Hussein at this time or that it will really help or make things better. Some people in power would like us to believe that. No one here has really addressed yet the recent observation about popular confusion between Bin Laden and Saddam and I think it's a good one. The fear of "the other" and the normal human desire for revenge are at high levels at this time. But it doesn't necessarily follow that we should act on them. And if you think about it, people who play on the fears and sadness of ordinary people for their own ends are not admirable. Likewise I think it's true that if Bush's motivation was to uphold international order and agreements then he wouldn't be using cowboy go-it-alone language. As free from fumbling as it was, I do think that Bush's State of the Union address was mostly saying underneath all the rhetoric that Saddam <cfbold> might </cfbold> be up to something really bad, and to me and I think many others that's not reason enough to go to war. I am willing to bet that any evidence remaining to be shown will be evidence of a "could be" scenario. This is not reason enough to me to inflict the sufferings of war on a nation which has already suffered greatly, and I think the question is: "Why is it enough for Bush?". Despite all the high-falutin' language I think the decision to go war that they have made is mostly a cold cost/benefit based one. They want to do it because they can and because it solves several problems for them at once. It doesn't solve those problems though if we don't buy into it. The point about clear and present danger that LeCarre makes is a good one, and it was not addressed in Mr. Lilek's commentary. Nor was the question of power wrapped in the language of righteousness which to me is always one of the clear indicators of evil afoot. These are dangerous times and there is much to think about - these are only my 2 cents as someone who is not famous and therefore beyond the kind of criticism that Mr. Lilek levels at Mr. LeCarre.:-) On that note though I would like to say that I am in favour of people with a public name speaking out for what they believe to be right, in fact I would go so far as to say they bear a greater responsibility than the ordinary Jane Blow. best wishes and prayers for peace, Patrick ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?method=subscribe&forumid=5 Signup for the Fusion Authority news alert and keep up with the latest news in ColdFusion and related topics. http://www.fusionauthority.com/signup.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5
