Well, you'll hear me regularly criticise my own government, it's policies
and particularly it's policies with regards to Iraq. I have plenty to say
about domestic UK politics too.

As for the British Empire as it was, I believe we have a major part to play
in the reasons behind the current situation in the Middle East.

The terror laws you refer to, were, at the time, the subject of much debate
and indeed anger over here, and the issue of Northern Ireland still
polarises opinions. We have our own problems, and I certainly won't deny
that.

Or yours Will. Funny that no one is attacking England's part in all of
this. Your country was the imperialist, feudal society that we all had to
break away from. Your country has passed far more draconian laws in regards
to privacy and the press than would ever be able to find support here. I
mean your terror laws from "the troubles" were bad enough. Yet no one talks
bad about Great Briton. The US is the perpetual target and it makes me
sick.

Many of these nations wouldn't exists or know freedom at all if it were not
for my country.

I don't think it's wrong. I just think it has gone too far. It is the in
thing to be anti-American. Even in America it's cool to be anti-American.
I recently was walking to the metro here in DC. Now my stroll takes me
through George Washington University. I happened to notice several students
wearing the little Palestinian black and white checkered scarf. As he got
into his land rover. I almost had to assault the guy. I was able to
restrain myself, but man did that get me mad. I mean he had the little no
war stickers and here he was wearing this in support of suicide bombers,
terrorists. Probably walked in the pretty little demonstration they had
here a few weeks back. Hey did anyone here know that International
A.N.S.W.E.R. is run by the World Workers Party. WWP are the guys who think
N Korea and Cuba are socialist utopias, and that Milosevic should be set
free.

Strange. I don't really know what to think sometimes. I just would love to
hear someone say thanks to us for once rather than shit on us every time we
try to help or make things better.

I understand your point entirely Tim, but perhaps the big difference is that
Gel's country's foreign policies don't have as much of an impact on the
world at large as yours? I don't think it's wrong to criticise other
countries for how they behave. And neither does America otherwise it
wouldn't involve itself in their affairs.

I'm not saying it's wrong per se, just that it's hardly surprising that
people feel free to criticise the most powerful nation in the world.

I find myself feeling the exact same thing sometimes Gel. I mean here's
something I think about. How many troops did your country send to Somalia
to try and feed people? How many did you send to eastern Europe to stop the
genocide? How many of your people have walked on the moon or in space?

What are the laws regarding free press in your country like (funny, the guy
doesn't comment on that fact the England has almost fully censored news when
the gov't wants it). What are your taxes like? Health care? Welfare?
Poverty? Unemployment?

See I have never been to your country, and I have never lived there. So I
don't consider myself as able to comment on it. I have no knowledge of your
situation. Even had I been there, I am still not a citizen of your nation,
and therefore I have no say what so ever in what goes on there, and as such
need formulate no opinion, as whatever happens there will have little to no
impact on my life.

Uhh..that's just a ridiculous standpoint to take when discussing a
subject on an international list.
It means you can't objectively argue anything about America with anyone
BUT Americans.

That's moves beyond the realm of 'patriotism' into something else.

Now, if Gel or will@hothorse said these things, I would have to defend
the US against all comers. Doesn't make much sense (even to me), but
criticism from inside good. Napster bad. Sorry. Criticism from outside
bad.

Still a bit unclear about it all,

Jerry,

Where are you from? Again, just trying to get a perspective on thoughts
in different parts of the world.
