Keep in mind that, if things like cognitive therapies don't work by
themselves, there's nothing wrong with antidepressants.
The problem I see with how they are used today is that they are like modern
snake oil -- supposedly a panacea (how do you spell that?). That isn't how
they should be used. I take antidepressants in order to give me enough
balance for things like cognitive therapy, excersize, light therapy, and
just doing things that please me to control my depression.
And sometimes it's necessary to have that help. Yesterday, for example, I
got my psychiatrist to bump my dosage for a couple of months because I seem
to have seasonal affective disorder and weeks on end of one sunny day in
seven was destroying me. But I don't expect that to magically make it go
away -- just make it bearable enough that I have the energy and motivation
to do the things I need to do to make it go away.
People talk about it being a crutch, but isn't that what you need when
you've got a broken leg?
Did that all make sense?
I'm certainly not advocating 'jumping on the meds bandwagon' but I do hope
you'll keep an open mind to it.
