you may be a bit incorrect there. The research does show that cognitive 
therapy for depression can be as effective as medication. When the two are 
used in conjunction the effectiveness of both approaches can be 
substantially increased. In my own research (see 
http://www.lyonsmorris.com/maret/RETstudy1.htm) we found that REBT, a form 
of cognitive behavioral therapy, was very effective.

But the approach you suggest is a good one.
