The point is that it has become a cliched argument.  That's the joke in
"Office Space" the lead character is losing the argument so he brings up
Hitler as a close.

It's become a joke in and of itself to bring up Hitler in an argument.
This is no different:

Statement: "I don't think that we should go to war with Iraq"

Reply: "Well, would have wanted to go to war with Hitler!"

It's ridiculous to bring it up.

This type of logical fallacy is called "non-sequitur" ("doesn't follow"
in Latin).  It's an attempt to win an argument by implying a connection
that doesn't exist.

In my opinion considering Hitler when determining a position on the Iraq
crisis is no more valid than considering Hitler when deciding what to
order for dinner.
