It depends how you remember.  If you remember by passing down stories that
create continued hatred/distrust/ etc then you condemn yourself to repeat
the past.  And remembering the holocaust hasn't prevented it from happening
again.  Various versions of ethnic cleansing have occurred since with little
global actions to stop it.

This seems to be one of the issues in many countries.  This long memory for
past atrocities leads to present and future atrocities.  At what point in
time do you need to just get over it?  Move on.  You can not change the
past, only use it to prevent repeating it.

Some things are harder to forget than others.

It took over 400 years to undo some of the things he did. The stories passed
down in County Cork are quite vivid, I assure you.

vivid? Cromwell was around in the 1500's
