I agree - the situation is not good as it is. But, as in the past, the fundamental ideals will, eventually come back to the surface. This is because the basic ideals are so well protected in this country. The kind of arguments you make have been made several times in the past (again look at Macarthyism, WWII Interment camps, American government treatment of native Americans, Slavery, etc). In all of those cases American took a shot in the arm, a slap in the face - and came back. None of those situations were ever allowed to continue to degenerate to the point where they changed the fundamental nature of this country. That of course doesn't mean that we just sit back and wait for "the country" sort itself out. We have to actively work to support that fundamental nature in face of extremes.
