But in general people like to know where they are and know how to get back to "safe" places. Use movement (animation, pop-ups, etc) as little as possible to prevent overload. Follow de facto standards - even if they're wrong (consistency is most important). One of the better books I've found to introduce beginners to this is here: http://www.useit.com/homepageusability/ This coffee-table book examines 50 popular Internet home pages and offers advice. It only covers the home (first) page but getting that right is massively important.
