I like the e-Trex by Garmin.

It's tiny (about the same size, but thicker, than a Palm pilot) but still
has a serviceable, backlit screen. The screen CANNOT show actual map data,
but will allow you to track and name stopping points on a hike and backtrack
to them (a directional rose can point you to the last stop).

It can remember a ton of places and runs for quite a while on 2 AA
batteries.

There's a decent accessories kit as well - a bike handlebar holster (very
nice and secure - the unit won't fall out as it's actually screwed in place)
and a PC serial cable to allow hook up to a laptop (where you can then view
full maps and your position using most mapping software).

My father is a traveling machinist and uses his all the time with MS Streets
and Trips - it's saved his hide more than once.

When I bought mine a coupla years ago it was the low end - about $149. I
would expect it to have come in price by now.
