One thing to keep in mind however is that there is a big push now to small
screens: handhelds, mobile phones, ultra-portables, etc.  This also includes
some odd screen resolutions: 900x500 and the like (wide screen laptops from
sony and Apple for example).  I'm not seeing a tremendous number of them in
my statistics (which may only mean that those people don't come to my site),
but in the next few years they could explode.

I just say this in response to the "money" comment - sometimes a small
screen means somebody with lots of money.  ;^)

In general I advocate making designs as liquid as possible: you can use
resolution as a guide, but there's nothing saying you have to force things
to that width.
