I wholeheartedly recommend checking out ubid for monitors. I bought my
factory refurb viewsonic trinitron 21" more than 5 years ago for ~$500
from them. At the time, the same monitor was going retail for $1100,
and it's still going strong today.

Beware though, that ubid's customer service really sucks (in my
opinion of course ;-)) if something goes wrong. You will probably have
to rely on a manufacturer warranty if it breaks (I had to do that with
a GF3 once).
