Well, I can respect someone going with the tool that is going to get the

job done for themselves, but there is a lot of misinformation going on

about the Mac right now that is starting to aggravate me.

The two big problems I have with Macs right now are that 1) Macs are

more expensive in terms of hardware, software, what have you, and this

has not changed, and 2) Macs are not 64 bit computers, and will not be

for at least two years.

The cost issue is easy to refute. You can find a tricked out Dell

machine online for about $1200 that is faster and has more hardware

features than a similar $1600 Mac.

The 64 bit issue needs to be pieced together. Mac has not built a 64 bit

operating system, they have built a 32 built operating system with

portions recoded to take advantage of 64 bit features. The hardware

specifications on the new G5 are impressive, and certainly more advanced

than most PC offerings right now. But, without software geared to take

advantage of all the hardware offers, you have something good but not

great.

It will take Apple at least a year to develop a full blown 64 bit OS,

which means application support is at least another year off from being

stable.

Macs, right now, are at the Windows 95 stage, IMHO. They have come up

with something cool, it will take them time to implement it, and, in the

mean time, they are making users pay to test their systems. They aren't

doing users any favors, and, while I will admit they have built some

powerful machines, they are way off from being able to deliver on what

their marketing promises.

On the other hand, Windows has a true 64 bit operating system in Windows

2003 Server. AMD just released its new 64 bit chip which (supposedly)

Windows 2003 can take advantage of. And various Linux OSes are already

64 bit, so...

Where's the beef?

Well, yes.  I do.  I mean, I'm a PC guy, but I have total respect for

the Mac platform with the advent of OS X.  Also, the G5 hardware is

prety damn sweet.  You get the best integration I've ever seen (though,

admittedly, there are problems associated with tight integration).

I think that whether the Mac is worth the money is not a question of

hardware or software value, I think it is a question of personal use

habits.  If you work better on the Mac, its hardware will stand up to

most PCs.  If you work better on a PC, you can get a box that stands up

well against the Mac.

So there.  Pthhhhh.  :-)
