what type of IT support is necessary, yes.

Do you really think web page development or IT support require the same type
of knowledge and training as a brain surgeon?
THAT is a laugh.

It always cracks me up that the only people who say this are the ones who
have no idea just how much work it is to get some designations.
Hey Bill, you think you can start doing brain surgery tomorrow by reading a
book on it? Do you think you'd want someone to operate on you whose only
training was that? Yeah, that "Doctor" designation doesn't prove anything -
only that that person passed a test. Forget the years as a scrub. Forget
the years studying and passing multiple tests proving that they understand
how the human body works.

LOL my point was that designations really dont prove anything. Sure it
is a place to start for some companies
and it probably is good to have such things but it proves nothing as to
how good a job someone will do etc.

lol only thing a Designation really proves is a person can pass a test.
It doesn't prove you would be able to adapt or anything else.
Though i would agree regardless of the fact it does not prove anything
it defiantly betters your chances of a job because people who don't know
enough to judge a persons skills will always fall back on certs or
designations.

Akk, I just have to say more about your concerns...
You're making an assumption that only CS degree holders could get a
desig.
This does not necessarily have to be the case (in fact, realistically
this
would never fly, simply because there's lots of qualified IT people that
don't have CS degrees, especially older workers).
You're also assuming that only people with desigs could work in IT.
This
isn't true either. However, people without desigs could be limited in
career progress (and, as a result, pay). Some jobs would also not be
available to them.
In your case, a desig would only end up helping your career. It would
prove
that you understand basic (and advanced) computing concepts. It would
prove
that you're not a one trick pony. It would prove that you would be able
to
adapt to new technologies and ideas in IT - only a few select of us, if
that, will still be using CF in 20 years.
As for fears about creating some sort of desig mafia, lots of other
professions that have desigs seem to get along just fine without having
to
break people's kneecaps.

so, then those of us with degrees in something other than CS degrees (I
happen to hold a BFA in Graphic Design and Illustration) would be
essentially SOL? I've been designing and building web sites since 1995,
first in straight HTML then server-side JS and now in CF. I can program
circles around CS degreed folks that are my friends and collegues.
Doesn't/Won't that count for anything anymore? Sure as hell glad it did
for me...
