iTunes is basically 4 things in one:

1) Music manager (playlists, collections, etc)
2) Music player (MP3, AAC, you name it)
3) Music Store (iTunes Music Store, of course)
4) iPod manager

So, you can buy tunes from the iMS, organize them how you see fit,
listen to them on your computer (or someone elses, or even play someone
else's playlists), and export the works to your iPod.  It's pretty
slick.  iPod and iTunes are pretty much meant for each other.
