My understanding is that it is not illegal to commit suicide.

However, wanting to commit suicide is considered one of the signs of
being foricibly commitable to a psychiatric institution.  So if you tell
your shrink you're going to do it, they can prevent you by committing
you.  One of those "commit harm to self or others" things that doctors
and (I think) therapists are legally required to attempt to stop.

I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

However, it is illegal to sell somone a knife if you know their intent
is to commit suicide.  Though I'd imagine that particular scenario is
hard to procecute.
