If they had presented The Source as something other than a place that he
actually reached (machine city), then I would agree with you. But we
specifically saw him go to machine city and talk to The Source. Sometimes in
stories the journey is the important part, but here there was a tangible
destination that he did have to reach.

I like your concept of the source though, and I think it's why the first
movie worked. But I don't think that's what was presented in the second two
movies. The first movie kept it simple, and the source code that Neo saw was
all that mattered. IMO, the Architect and fleshing out of the Oracle and
such only lead to contradictions.
