[Sorry - things've been crazy at the office so I'm not able to answer list
mail there]

MS confuses the issue: only Pro will let you do "Remote Desktop" however
home WILL let you do "Remote Assistance".  They both use the same exact
technology.  The only difference is that Remote Desktop can be set up to
wait for connections where Remote Assistance is strictly on demand.

If you set both you and your folks up with MSN Messenger its drop-dead easy
to use as well.  They can go to "Actions" and "Ask for Remote Assistance"
and choose from anybody online.  (They can also right-click your name if
you're online and do the same thing).  They'll get a prompt asking them for
confirmation that they want you to see their screen and then yer in.

When I first upgraded I needed Pro for two reasons: only pro supported dual
processors and only Pro supported dual monitors.  The former I could see,
the latter annoyed me (I think they were fishing for differences - kind of
like when CF Pro and Enterprise come out).  I believe since then video card
makers have done their own dual monitor drivers for XP Home, but if that's
an issue you should check.

I think there are also limits on security when sharing files and such - but
nothing most home users would care about.

If it were me I'd save the money and go with XP Home - you'll save enough to
get them a distraction as well. Halo, Baldur's Gate. Doom III.  ;^)

Really?  Hmm, I looked at way back when and came away thinking that only
professional would allow me to do remote desktop.  At least, the local
windows help docs made it seem that way.  That is really the only reason
that I wanted them to go pro.  But if I can get the same functionality from
home edition....  I don't really see the need to have it set up as a
"server" as you say.  I'm pretty sure anytime I hop on there they will have
called me and be sitting in front of the screen anyway.

Any other reasons to justify the extra expense for pro for non-power users?
They are totally email/word/surfing only users.

Thanks, Jim.

Matthew.

Just so you know - you can remote desktop for assistance in XP Home.

Anybody on XP (home or pro) can "request" assistance and share their
desktop, but only pro can set up a "server" allowing the desktop to be
accessed at will.

But you are right in one thing: remote desktop (which I use all the time to
help my mommy who uses XP Home) is the BALLS.  No more confused "what
button?" or "It's says something bad!" or "I think the mouse crashed".  ;^)
