I am guessing you know the MAC address. They are going to have to run
NetBIOS, but no doubt they prob are with no firewall and windows. email me
off list and I will send you an app to do it with.

I guess you could, did it have a firewall installed? Also, net admins
  sometimes frown on that, heh

Or if it is DHCP, you can check the mac address when it renews it's IP

It is possible, providing that the laptop was online when the scan was
  done

:   I hope she had insurance!  Anyway without knowing the IP assigned
when
    it is
:   online, it will be difficult to ping it.  The Univ network can do a
    systemwide
:   scan, if they were so motivated, but I would not bet the farm on
their
:   willingness to do so.  At least get a report on file with Campus
    security
    for
    :   records sake.
    :
    :   What a shame!

:   : Hey guys, my friend had her laptop stolen at her university.  I
was
    wondering
:   if there was a way to ping the laptop (it has a guest account) or
  search
    it
    for
:   its mac address or something like that u know what I mean!
    :   :
:   : Or maybe ask the IT department if they can alert us if a computer
  with
    the
:   correct mac address logs into the wifi.
    :   :
    :   : it's a 2,000 laptop (silly girl)
    :   :
    :   : PLEASE HELP!  SHE's really depressed!
