Fixing a Laptop

Hey guys, my ex's sister's SOny Viao is displaying a "OS corrupted" or "OS not found" error.  I dont have any experience fixing a laptop.  How should I fix it?  There are a few files that need to be backed up.  but how do I back them up?  With a regular PC i just take the hard drive and load it on another computer and back it up into another drive.  But how can this be done with a laptop?

Also, they lost the original restore CD.  is it possible to install a clean new OS using a brand new windows XP cd? :D

please help!
