Our desktop app developer here uses Visual Studio and I think he generally
codes in C++. For IE users, he's created .msi files that when the link is
clicked will download and start the install pretty cleanly. For other
browsers, he has to do a standalone installer that the user has to go find
on their system after downloading to run it.
We haven't invested in a proper install development engine like Install
Shield since he's been able to get around it, but something like that can
make building installers a bit easier. It could be overkill for this though.
Of course, even with it you would still have to write the app that creates
the shortcut.
If you're like me and don't know shit about building desktop apps, then you
probably want to find someone who can do it for you. You can't do it just in
CF/_javascript_.
