I don't claim to have never smacked or spanked my kids -- I have done both when it seemed necessary -- but on the whole I agree that its main benefit was to formalize the idea that yes, I am very pissed. And now it is over. I don't think a fast smack upside the head is a horrible method of disciplining your children, but I don't think it is the best, either. It's certainly not something I think an educator should be handing out.
On the whole I have found that explaining to the child what he or she has done wrong and why it is wrong and what is going to happen because of the bad behavior is the very best method. I've gotten some really nice, really sensible kids out of it.
