Yeah, they mentioned that in the article. It's just really depressing. He
was definitely not the norm in the "me first" world of modern professional
athletics.  From all accounts he was just a smart, down-to-earth guy who
felt the need to serve. He also turned down $9 million from the (at the
time) Super Bowl champion Rams out of loyalty to the Cardinals. It's just
too bad.

yeah, i'm in Phoenix and it's huge news out here (he played at ASU and then
for the Cardinals).

not only did he walk away from a relatively lucrative NFL contract, and a
probable lucrative NFL career (to make $18k as a ranger)...but he wouldn't
allow any requests for media coverage of his training or anything.  He
didn't want to be known as "the guy who gave up a lucrative NFL contract to
fight for his country".  He just wanted to be a guy who fought for his
country when the need arose.
