Try SSH (SECURE SHELL) for Remote access.
It gives you only a shell, but that is all you need.
Also the big + here, is that ssh is encrypted....
vnc has a few know security issues.

Give it a go, get the rpm's for ssh from www.rpmfind.net
download all 3 parts. ssh / ssh server / ssh
client
