It hasn't been mentioned here, but another alternative is using 'exim' for your
mail server.  It's the default server for Debian distros so I've been using it
around here for a while now.  I've never used qmail, but one thing I like
about exim is it acts like Sendmail still on the command line, so any perl/php
scripts that might be on the box can be written assuming Sendmail is there.

Sendmail's a bear to configure historically, but that changed quite a bit
when the 'M4' macro engine was used to take care of the nitty-gritty details.

I've used both Sendmail and exim now, and I'm sticking with exim until I
have a good reason to switch off it.  Just my two cents though.
