Dave,

Good questions. That goes beyond what I've used PostgreSQL for. While I
think PostgreSQL can easily take MySQL and MS Access in a fair fight for all
but the simplest of Web sites, I don't think it's really ready to entirely
eliminate SQL Server as a competitor, primarily for those who have the funds
to afford SQL Server in the first place (i.e. the Enterprise datacenter
market).

I've been disappointed by the lack of replication features in PostgreSQL.
The support for replication among several PostgreSQL databases is still in
development and is available as an add-on. I don't know how well having SQL
Server push to a PostgreSQL database works. Are you doing this with a
one-way DTS batch from the SQL Server? I can't see why that wouldn't work,
at least just for the data. I suppose this really only comes down to the
quality of the Windows ODBC driver for PostgreSQL, and the differences in
generating Auto-number primary keys between the two databases (IDENTITY vs.
Sequences).

PostgreSQL does work well as a replacement for the datastore in Access. I
set up a client to use a PostgreSQL server running on a Mac OS X box while
still using Access as a front end for report generation on their PCs.

As this really interests me, I wouldn't mind experimenting with it. E-mail
me off list if you want to work together to try to test some of your ideas.

Brian

Brian,

My question is,

Can PostGreSQL successfully replace MS SQL Server, whilst maintaining the
ability to replicate or import from a remote MS SQL Server database?

I've ported our CF(MX) apps over to linux but have retained MS SQL 7 as the
backend database with the intention of upgrading soon to SQL2000 for
compatibility with our suppliers and clients systems which are mostly M$
centric. I'd love to be able to save several thousand dollars (SQL2000
enterprise is approx 12000 GBP) and move to an alternative whilst retaining
the ability to update (replicate) from our suppliers SQL 2000 box and push
updates to our clients using SQL/Access. Can PostGreSQL do this?

Are there any good comparison matrix sites?

Thanks,
Dave
