I run CF on a Linux box with Red Hat and MySQL, plus remoting to a Windows SQL2000 server, and have never had the issues you mention.
My configuration in CF Admin are 1. Enable long text retrieval. 2. maintain database connection 3, query timeout 15 seconds. 4. Trusted Cache OFF 5.
