Adam, I think you're misinterpreting the Release Notes (though it's not your
fault, because it is a bit unclear). Macromedia does indeed still formally
support Apache 1.3.x versions, according to this link below, which was last
updated on March 19:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/coldfusion/ts/documents/tn18340.htm

If you look under the "Supported Software" section, you will see a reference
to the need to recompile Apache using the new modules in U3. In fact, there
are specific fixes in U3 to remove that annoying "EAPI" error you see when
you start CFMX. I thought I remember reading somewhere that you will need to
use 1.3.27 because of some key bug fixes, but I can't seem to find that link
right now, so you can take that with a grain of salt.

In reading the U3 Release Notes, I do see where Macromedia talks about
versions of Apache prior to 2.0.43. However, based on numerous posts, they
consider the code bases between 1.3.x and 2.0.x to be different. The reason
Macromedia keep "upping" the 2.0.x requirements is because Apache kept
fiddling with the Magic Number, which was causing problems not just with CF,
but many other modules, including PHP. Apache has stated that they will not
do this anymore with 2.0.43 and onward, which, I believe, is why Macromedia
raised the requirement level (and I'm sure there are other reasons that I'm
not aware of). So, as far as Macromedia is concerned at least, "earlier than
2.0.43" means any 2.0.x release version prior to 2.0.43.

I in no way speak for Macromedia, as I am not an employee or other
representative for them. Perhaps Stephen Erat or somebody else who monitors
this list at Macromedia will chime in. But I have seen this topic arise many
times and the above has always been their response.

Regards,
Dave.
