I have to say that I agree with Dave in that this was behavior I
observer -- not just a hunch based on posts. We are using j2SE
1.4.2_05. However, we are two months past this problem (we have since
taken the external program and wrapped it in a Zope external method
that we now call via cfhttp), so I don't know if I will be able to get
a repro case. I will definitely try though.

Steve, any chance you could try this on a CFMX for J2EE instance that
has CFMX all patched *up to* Updater 1 -- don't put Updater 1 on it.
This *may* have been the configuration we were using.
