I regularly use 1.4.2_08 with windows (I've stopped hosting Linux boxes) and have no problem with it at all. However, I do recall someone mentioning problems with ldap and 1.4.2_08 with the recommendation of using 1.4.2_05 instead. (Not sure what the intermediate versions are like) In terms of upgrading, just make sure you get the SDK. The standard jvm does not contain the necessary server files. Otherwise, its a simple install, repointing CF Admin to the jre folder in the SDK installation forlder and then giving CF a bump. Obviously, restarting can be an issue for clients/sites, but given that you have to restart the server regularly anyway, this isn't going to be a problem. Hope this helps a bit.
